  • Job Summary

    The Risk Manager is responsible for identifying and investigating all risks (actual and perceived) to patients, visitors, staff and physicians at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Rahway and its affiliates. The Risk Manager reports directly to the hospital’s V.P. of Legal Affairs and General Counsel and is responsible for administering the risk management program on a day-to-day, hospital-wide basis. Tasks include investigating the frequency and causes of claims or accidents to patients and staff; interfacing directly with the hospital’s insurance carriers and defense legal counsel; handling all claims and litigation requirements; managing active workers’ compensation claims; conducting internal investigations and root cause analyses; developing accurate and timely risk management reports for hospital committees; ensuring appropriate reporting to all required outside agencies; managing the hospital’s internal event reporting system; implementing risk management initiatives; conducting educational programs; and coordinating efforts to reduce professional and general liability risk exposure with the objective of protecting the hospital’s assets and ensuring a safe environment for all patients and staff. The Risk Manager must protect the confidential nature of all hospital information, at all times, without exception. Reputation and ethical conduct must be of the highest standard and beyond reproach.


    Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree and clinical background desired. Must have strong verbal, interpersonal and writing skills. Must understand clinical issues affecting patients and staff. Must have experience with governmental incident reporting requirements. Must have experience managing claims and working directly with insurance carriers and outside counsel. Experience reviewing and understanding health data and interacting with patients desired. Experience with risk management in a health care setting required (in a hospital setting strongly desired), with experience in quality improvement and patient/employee safety strongly desired. Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint computer software.
