Answer phones and routes calls. Interact with patients, physicians, hospital staff, and family members, providing information and instructions to patients. Utilize hospital and laboratory computer systems to perform job duties. Handle patient specimens, accessions, processes, distributes to appropriate departments or reference laboratories for testing. Print and file laboratory reports and other patient documents and forms. Obtain blood specimens from patients as ordered by the licensed healthcare provider, label the specimen appropriately and distribute to the laboratory department for testing. Knowledgeable in all aspects of the pre-analytical phase of laboratory testing, including specimen rejection criteria. Maintain the inventory of supplies required for specimen collection. Dispose of specimen collection needles and supplies safely. Assist laboratory technologists and clerical staff.
